And he preached the word unto them.

The lame man had some very good friends.
And it was noised that he was in the house.
3 and they come unto him bringing one sick of the palsy which was borne of four.
So they made a hole in the roof above him and let the man down in front of everyone.
Good news translation because of the crowd however they could not get the man to him.
5 when jesus saw their faith he said unto the sick of the palsy son thy sins be forgiven thee.
When they had made an opening they let the man down lying on his mat.
Sometimes a roller would be used to pack down the clay.

They were determined to get their friend to jesus.

To make a hole the men would have had to dig through the clay and remove some of the sticks.
Probably the roof was so low that no ropes were needed to let the man down.
4 and when they could not come nigh unto him for the press they uncovered the roof where he was.
And when they had broken it up they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
2 and straightway many were gathered together insomuch that there was no room to receive them no not so much as about the door.
So they made a hole in the roof right above the place where jesus was.
